Hydrogen in the natural gas network: new requirements for determination, testing and billing
The increasing addition of hydrogen to the natural gas network presents gas suppliers with new requirements for determining energy quantities. Robotron solutions support the precise calculation in compliance with the current regulations - in particular the determination of the K-number according to the SGERG-mod-H2 method and the calculation according to AGA8-92DC in accordance with DVGW Code of Practice G 685, Part 6 (August 2024 edition).
With increasing hydrogen admixture, the focus is on reliable calorific value testing in accordance with G 685 Part 2, which becomes more complex with hydrogen admixtures. Robotron is working on a solution to map the modified calorific value test in accordance with PTB G19 in robotron*ecount.
Robotron is also prepared for the billing of pure hydrogen networks in accordance with DVGW worksheet G 685, part 8 (first edition November 2024) and will efficiently support the affected network operators in their day-to-day business in robotron*ecount.
Fit for the future: market communication in transition
Following the entry into force of the AS4 protocol for gas, extensive changes are imminent in the area of market communication. Robotron supports suppliers in implementing the new processes and formats in the upcoming changes:
The Robotron software solutions are prepared for the new requirements thanks to early adaptations and regular updates. This means that our customers are not only legally compliant, but also future-proof.
]]>
envelio and Robotron cover the entire process chain according to § 14a EnWG
The implementation of Section 14a EnWG represents a further challenge for many grid operators in the context of the energy transition. They are obliged to dim consumers if there is a risk of overload in part of the low-voltage grid - and to do so in a precise and non-discriminatory manner. Such interventions can only be carried out reliably with specialised software. envelio and Robotron have worked together on an optimal solution that covers the entire §14a process and all interfaces of the various IT systems:
For this purpose, the real-time data of the grid operators (TAF10, RLM and local grid stations) are integrated into the Robotron data platform. The Intelligent Grid Platform (IGP) from envelio accesses and processes this data in order to determine and visualise the current status of the respective grid. This gives grid operators an overview of what is happening in their grids at all times. The Robotron system can permanently archive the data via the network in the optimum degree of compression.
Control commands are transmitted in encrypted form
Building on this, other IGP tools, such as congestion management, make it possible to control the grid in line with demand and automatically determine control commands in accordance with §14a EnWG. Robotron encrypts the control commands calculated by envelio and transmits them to the corresponding smart meter gateways. There they are received and decrypted so that the consumption units can implement the respective control commands.
The software solution from the two IT specialists thus enables network operators to handle the §14a process chain in a consistent, automated and legally compliant manner. This also creates synergy effects with other processes relevant to network operators, such as network planning.
envelio and Robotron have already successfully demonstrated their solution in the ENERVIE network. It can now be implemented for all network operators. Robotron offers network operators an efficient solution based on the processing of real-time data. This not only enables the seamless integration of measurement data, but also the precise and fast transmission of control commands in order to optimally fulfil the requirements of modern network management tasks.
Björn Heinemann, Managing Director of Robotron Datenbank-Software GmbH, comments on the partnership: "Monitoring and control in the low-voltage sector are key pillars for the success of the energy transition. With its innovative energy data management solutions, Robotron is an established IT partner for numerous players in the energy market. The partnership with envelio is an important step towards realising end-to-end control at the low-voltage level and covering the entire process chain of grid-oriented control in accordance with §14a EnWG. Together, we are creating synergies that will enable us to seamlessly integrate our solutions and offer our customers an even more powerful control instrument."
Dr Simon Koopmann, co-founder and CEO of envelio, comments: "Many grid operators see it as a challenge to implement Section 14a EnWG in compliance with the law - especially as there is no separate control system in the low-voltage grid as there is in the medium and high-voltage sector. Precise real-time data is essential for control at the lowest grid level. We are therefore all the more pleased that, together with the experienced data specialist Robotron, we have created a solution that allows grid operators to automate the entire process from start to finish based on real-time data."

]]>Control commands were transmitted from the Robotron system to the PPC CLS adapter via the BDEW Web API using CLS.EEDI and forwarded locally to the Solar Manager home energy management system (HEMS) using the EEBUS protocol. This enabled the complete control chain to be verified in accordance with the requirements of §14a EnWG and §9 EEG.
This solution closes an essential gap between grid operators, market players and end consumers. It enables the continuous and bidirectional control of generation and consumption units. Furthermore, this end-to-end solution optimises the grid integration of prosumers and promotes their market integration. As a solution that is already available today, this metering point operator offers all the tools for planning security and the basis for a successful smart grid rollout.
Kathrin Rust, Managing Director of Solar Manager GmbH, explains: "The implementation via EEBUS enables us to precisely execute digital control commands and reliably forward feedback to our partners. This proves that the requirements of Section 14a EnWG and Section 9 EEG are technically feasible today and offers grid operators and market participants a future-proof solution."
With the CLS adapter, PPC supplied the secure link between the backend systems and the customer system. Robotron supplied the system landscape including the BDEW Web API and CLS.EEDI as the communication protocol. At the end point of the chain, Solar Manager ensures the local control of the system via EEBUS and the correct feedback of the switching commands to the partners in the system landscape. This ensures stepless and bidirectional control.
"The project impressively demonstrates that the regulatory requirements have already been met and marketable solutions are available," says Karen Schmid, Team Leader CLS Products. "Anyone who wants to implement control can get started today."
Further information and a live demonstrator of the end-to-end solution will be presented at E-World at the PPC stand (Hall 3, Stand 3H102) and at the Robotron stand (Hall 3, J116).

As part of the cooperation, a Bosch heat pump (type Compress 5800i AW) was controlled via EEBUS protocol using a CLS gateway from PPC. The switching command came from the aEMT system Robotrons. The heating environment is thus ready for stepless control in accordance with §14a EnWG and can therefore be operated according to market or grid-serving aspects.
With this system, heat pump operators can benefit from electricity price-oriented and, in future, time-variable grid charges. This would also allow grid operators, for example, to react in advance to known power bottlenecks in grid sections and issue start-up commands for heat pumps. The power demand of the heat pumps is thus postponed and an emerging critical situation is defused by the lower power demand.
Enormous potential: heat pumps as a building block for decarbonization
In view of current and future developments, it is clear that there is huge potential for companies in energy sales and for competitive and metering point operators. This applies to both standardized solutions and customized approaches that serve the market addressees. By using standardized digital communication, aggregators can effectively tap into the flexibility resources of the heating transition and actively contribute to the decarbonization of the heating sector. The German government's expansion targets of installing six million heat pumps in Germany by 2030 offer enormous potential for CO2 savings. According to the “heat pump traffic light” from FfE Munich, 75% of existing buildings could already be supplied with heat pumps.
